Regretting to hear of "new distress" in Ellis's family, but hoping that they will still be able to visit in the fall; thanking him for the letter introducing Daniel Scott to Mr. Blackburne (in the West Indies); hoping he has received the "uncastrated" copy of "Sir Tristrem;" mentioning Leyden's transcript of the "Lai le Freine" and saying he will set a "proper person" to work on the "Seven Wise Masters," noting that it is a "very curious" romance. Asking for Ellis's response to "Sir Tristrem," suggesting he submit an article to the Edinburgh Review, and criticizing the editor Jeffrey. Responding to his "doubts and queries" concerning the identification of the Clerk of Tranent and speaking at length about various details related to Arthurian legends, English history, poets and bards, and the translation of romances into English.
